Can Lesnar get it done against Mir?

29 01 2008

Brock Lesnar is what we in the geek world call an ‘Uber Athlete’.  After declining to play in the NFL Europe he chose to take on the world of mixed martial arts.  He has one fight under his belt with a quick win.  He took his opponent down (no shocker) and then proceeded to give him the ground n pound beating of his life (still no shocker).

Does Lesnar have more than a take down and ground n pound?  Maybe not, but I doubt he needs anything else.  He takes on Frank Mir, former heavyweight champ, and current Brazilian JJ black belt.  Mir has the advantage on submissions.  He has the advantage on his feet with experience.  Lesnar is a collegiate wrestling star and former WWE wrestling star.  He has been training and should know how to throw a real punch by Saturday.

What will this fight come down to you ask?  Who freaking knows.  Lesnar should be able to bully anyone at this weight.  The guy is a freaking beast with the cardio of a japanese lightweight.  But how much does experience play a role in this fight?  Frank Mir owns the experience and the ability.

Our predictions for this fight….. buy the ppv, order some pizza and drink something frothy and cold.  This is going to be one hell of a fight.  Lesnar will win in the first 2 minutes by ground and pound tko or Mir will win if it lasts longer than two minutes.

Our prediction for the Tim Sylvia vs Noguiera fight: Sylvia will win by KO or TKO in the second round.  Too bad too because we would really rather someone else have the belt besides Sylvia.

UFC Fight night results: Burkman robbed immediately after fight?

24 01 2008

In Mike Swick’s 170lb debut he encountered a dangerous obstacle.  That obstacle was dealing with decreased strength from cutting weight while fighting one of the strongest men at 170lbs.  Josh Burkman is 3 inches shorter and has a lot more muscle mass than Swick.  Burkman pushed the entire fight and never gave Swick a chance to get started.  Swick landed one head kick and one body kick in the second round.  That was all the action we saw from Swick.  Burkman constantly pushed for a takedown and dominated the hand exchanges.

At one point in the fight he even felt confident to throw a spinning front roundhouse kick that was totally ubsurd, but entertaining.  When the decision came back the judges gave the fight to Swick for some unknown reason. The crowd booed and Burkman simply walked out of the cage.  Swick apoligized for his performance.

A NOTE TO DANA WHITE:  You left boxing because of it’s deep corruption.  Having the judges throw a fight because you hope to promote one fighter over another is just as bad as Mora/Manfredo II from the Contender fiasco.  Please, Please don’t start down that dangerous road, we love the UFC.

In a previous fight Patrick Cote found himself on the giving end of some punishment and pain as he knocked Drew McFeddries out cold.

UFC 80 Results and Recap – Penn shows up!

21 01 2008

If you happened to read our UFC 80 Predictions you wouldn’t need to read our recap.  BJ Penn did exactly what we thought he would.  Maybe he read our blog and formulated his game plan based on what we said…….

Back to reality, Penn lit Stevenson up.  By the time Penn and Stevenson took the fight to the ground Joe Stevenson was losing more blood from his head than we care to see a fighter lose.  Penn used the slippery nature of blood to his advantage, used his legs to strangle Joe’s midsection and sunk in a nasty rear naked choke.

UFC 80 Predictions – BJ Penn fights Joe Stevenson

18 01 2008

This fight isn’t too difficult to call.  BJ Penn is better on his feet standing and throwing those big Hawaiian hands and he is the best in the world on the ground.  Joe Stevenson is no slouch on the ground, his Jitz is legit, but noone can roll with BJ Penn.

As I have said before BJ Penn will win this fight, or he’ll beat himself.  BJ’s fight with himself is tougher than his fight with Stevenson.  Will he show up in shape, we’ll see Saturday night.

BJ Penn will win this fight on the ground in round two.  He will hurt Stevenson in the first round with sharp jabs and quick punch combinations.  Look for Stevenson to bleed from his face early.  BJ Penn loves the rear naked choke so that is my guess, could be the infamous arm, shoulder, body bar that he loves to wreak havoc with too.

Gonzaga – Werdum (I think)

I’ve seen both of these men fight well and I’ve seen both of them lose while fighting well.  Gonzaga is famous only for knocking out Mikro Cro Cop with a high leg kick. My guess is Gonzaga doesn’t have enough in the tank and will lose in the second round.

Marcus Davis will win by decision.

BJ Penn – which one will show up?

17 01 2008

BJ Penn is my favorite Mixed Martial Artist I have ever watched, barely edging out Fedor.  Fedor has given so many “Rocky” performances it is hard not to love him.  BJ Penn is the most well rounded fighter to grace the octagon and ring.

The problem with BJ Penn is you never know which BJ will show up to fight.  The BJ who wants to rip someone’s head off (and usually does) or the BJ that has been spending too much time at the beach (who can blame him? he lives in Hawaii for crying out loud).

When BJ trains hard, like he did against Jens Pulver II, he is unstoppable.  That BJ Penn gives Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre the need to be worried about him stepping up in weight again.

The sloppy BJ Penn that couldn’t finish the fight against Matt Hughes in their rematch makes me worried about paying the $40 bucks for the pay per view.

The prediction for this fight isn’t “Does BJ Penn Win or Joe Stevenson Win?”. The question is “Does BJ win, or does he beat himself?”

If you want to fight like a pro, then you must train like a pro.
